A Delhi University teacher has instituted a scholarship in the name of Irom Sharmila, the civil rights activist from Manipur who has been on hunger strike since November 2000 demanding repeal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 (AFSPA).
Professor Nandini Sundar, from the faculty of social science , has set up the Irom Sharmila Scholarship — Rs 50,000 —to any graduate student who is studying in any university or college in Delhi. “The idea is to honour Irom Sharmila’s contribution in the fight against AFSPA. A jury of four will select the student. Preference will be given to those who come from AFSPA affected areas, have suffered under AFSPA or similar laws or can demonstrate financial need.
