National Seminar
“Teacher Education in Contemporary Society” under UGC-SAP Phase-II Organized by Department of Education to be held on 21st – 22nd March 2013 at Rajiv Gandhi University, Rono Hills Doimukh
About the Seminar
Teachers have a great responsibility in shaping future of nations. “The Destiny of India is now being shaped in her classrooms” (Kothari Commission 1964-66). As a matter of fact teacher education and training becomes a matter of crucial importance for national development. “The status of the teacher reflects the socio
cultural ethos of the society, it is said that no people can rise above the level of its teachers” (National Policy on Education, 1986). But Teacher Education in India has been struggling to strengthen its identity. Struggle does not mean degeneration of values and degeneration of institutions. It is true that after persistent struggle there is evident improvement, but, still there is no end to perfection. Every establishment has noise. There are
issues & resolves, problems & solutions, puzzles & pathways. Many paradigms have emerged for sustaining the development of Teacher Education in India, such as, Multi-Mode Teacher Education, Multi Cultural Teacher Education, Technology Integrated Teacher Education, Inclusive Education Teacher Education. There is an evident shift from quantitative research to qualitative research to sustain and enhance the quality of Teacher education. All the emerging paradigms justify their being. But, we need to evolve the self regulatory mechanisms to assure relevance & quality. Rather than abusing Teacher Education by such uncivilized expressions, as, willful delays, unlawful deferring, norms flouting, State disregarding and lawless, grossly gone, we need to find out genesis of the problems. Teacher Education is losing its identity.
We are inviting the State to dictate us. There is judicial over activism. Education & Teacher Education should be so powerful and graceful that nobody should dare dictate. It is high time for the Indian Teacher Education to revive & strengthen its identity. Let us seminar at the national level to assure and ensure the
quality of Teacher Education.
